Tools for sheet metal prototypes

Rapid sheet metal, Inc., specializes in rapid sheet metal ® prototypes, has developed a rapid tooling system for custom sheet metal hinges.  Utilities system's flexibility allows most sheet metal fabrications of custom hinge to be prototyped during two weeks for less than $ 1,000.
"When it comes to rapid manufacturing, every day, every hour and every minute really counts," said James Jacobs, President of rapid sheet metal Inc. "By eliminating the long lead times associated with punch press tools for hinges, mechanical engineers and product developers can test and iterate their designs which include hinges in weeks rather than months. "

Traditionally, designers are limited to hinges tools as their production sheet metal fabricator have in stock if they are willing to pay up to $ 5,000 and wait 2 or more weeks for the tool to produce their specific hinge design geometry.  Rapid sheet metal Inc admitted that this compromised the flexibility of their customers to design sheet metal parts such as cabinets, drawers, doors and covers.  After hearing numerous stories about frustration, rapid sheet metal Inc investigated the possibility of a low-cost, quick turn custom hinge tool systems and order, was able to implement it.
Custom hinge tool can be manufactured for rapid sheet metal ® parts made of aluminium, cold rolled steel and stainless steel.  Rapid sheet metal Inc also offers custom powder coating of any design, which gives a durable, colored finish and out sourced plating services.

SchmartBoard Adds DFN Boards to “EZ” Solder SMT to DIP Lineup

SchmartBoard, a company that makes prototyping electronic circuits easier, has expanded its product offering with a new family of products that support the use of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) components with breadboards.   Schmartboard has released two new SMT to DIP adapters that use the patented "ez" technology, which makes soldering the surface mount component simple.  As with all "ez" boards, SchmartBoard is the only company with a patented solution for easily soldering of surface mount parts.

“We have hit a real need with this line,” says Neal Greenberg, SchmartBoard’s VP of Sales and Marketing.  “This has been our fastest growing family of products in the few months that we have been marketing it.  The reason is that many users are in a quandary because they still need to use a breadboard and in many cases and only surface mount components are available. No other company has a solution to easily solder components such as QFN and DFN, so there has not been a cost-effective, usable solution until now.”

The two new boards are the first released that support DFN devices.  Part number 204-0021-01 gives you the ability to use two 8 lead, .5mm pitched DFN components.  Part 204-0022-01 supports two 10 lead, .5mm pitched DFN components.

The suggested retail on each of these new products is $6.00

Schmartboard plans to release new products for this family over the next year until all of the most popular QFN and DFN chip package sizes are supported for breadboard use.

SchmartBoard assigned important circuit Prototyping Patent

Fremont, CA-SchmartBoard announced today that patent,228 was granted to 7,511 Schmartboard's "EZ" technique for hand soldering Surface Mount Technology (SMT) electronic components.

In summary, the patent covers a modification of the circuit board technology.  A normal printed circuit board (PCB) consists of two main components on the surface.  Solder mask, is the colored areas, and the electronic pads, which is the metallic areas.  The electronic pads are on top of the solder mask, and that's where the electronic components are placed.  This system works well when circuits are mass-produced with precise robotic pick and place equipment.  However, not the average engineer when circuits need to be hand soldered for projects or prototypes, skill or expertise to do it. Alternatively, it is very expensive to have a custom PCB fabricated and parts on it.

Schmartboards new patent requires solder mask being much higher than pillows.  The pads are also "pre tinned" with solder.  What this amendment does is to electronic components for easy hand-placed by almost anyone.  Because the solder already on pillows, a user simply takes a soldering iron and the solder melts component lead or go boards through a new flow furnace.  This technology makes it almost impossible to create shorts or bridges when the soldering SMT components.

"Our technology is utilized by three primary user groups: industry, education, and hobbyists," says Neal Greenberg, Schmartboard's VP of sales and marketing.  "It has saved a lot of time and money for the industry, SMT technology to be used in education, and has made it possible for amateurs to use current component technologies.  Schmartboards website has videos of SMT components are soldered and offers a free demo Board with chip for users to try before they buy.  Standard SchmartBoards with "ez" technology has a suggested retail price of $ 9.99 and is available through the Schmartboards website and leading electronic retailer. "

SchmartBoard Releases Family for SMT Connectors

These boards support SMT connectors from companies such as Hirose, Molex, Samtec and Tyco and pitches of .4mm, .5mm, 8mm, 1.0mm and 1.27mm.  They also use our patented SchmartBoard|ez technology which is our solution for hand soldering surface-mount components. After some extensive R&D we learned that two skills are needed to hand-solder surface mount components. First, the ability to place the components on the solder pads and keep them in place to solder.  Second is the ability to solder such small areas without creating short circuits on the chip legs. SchmartBoard|ez resolves both issues so that virtually anyone can now use surface mount components.

“Users have been asking us to support SMT connectors for some time now,” said Neal Greenberg, Schmartboard’s VP of sales and marketing.  “In fact, users have been taking our SOIC boards and cutting them in half to support SMT connectors and LCD panels.  With these new boards we now support the vast majority of what people have been requesting, and we hope to work closely with the connector manufacturers to fill in other areas of need.”

The suggested retail for the boards is $9.99 each or 10 packs for $80.00.

NNMC releases new Multi Process Prototyping machine

National Nanotechnology manufacturing Center (NNMC) announces the launch of Multi Proto Labs, an entirely new concept in rapid prototyping. MPL is capable of 3D printing, precision milling, drop-on-demand printing, extrusion deposition, plus much more-all in one machine.

Benefits from performing these processes in a machine are many, including lower up-front cost, faster prototyping, great accuracy, lower production costs for the prototype, plus much more.

Multi Proto Labs is also capable to produce fully functional, multiple-material components in a single machine.

Rapid prototyping technology allows for inventors and engineers to visualize and test new concepts in a way that was unthinkable just a few years ago. But even with these advances, can be expensive and time-consuming prototypes for prototype operators.

Traditional prototypes often involves moving the prototype piece from a prototyping machine to another. In some cases, the prototype developed in the days of several different machines. Each of these machines can be very costly.

"What makes Multi Proto Labs differ from conventional rapid prototyping is that it can perform many different prototyping processes in a machine," said Calvin Close, NNMC's media spokesman for Multi Proto Lab.

Patent-pending Multi Proto Labs is a multi module machine. Each module or attachment, execute a unique process, such as 3D printing, Drop-on-Demand printing, laser hardening and many others. MPL picks up a module (for example, 3D Dual additive printing head) and perform the process on the prototype part. When the process is complete, Multi Proto Labs then picks up another header (which Drop-on-Demand printing head) and perform the process on the same prototype piece.

This process can be repeated with an unlimited number of different modules until a fully functional component is produced. The number of modules and their individual processes is limited only by the imagination and needs of the user.

Multi Proto labs open mockups to significantly more organizations due to its lower up-front and operational costs.

Currently, the Multi Proto Labs in two models, the compact MPL-1000 and the larger MPL-2000.

The main differences between the models is maximum prototype size machines are able to produce, and the number of modules that platforms can hold.

For either machine, you can increase the capacity of the machine by manually changing out modules.

More than five years and more than $ 1 million has been spent on developing Multi Proto Labs.

Schmit Prototypes featured on MoldMakingTechnology.com

An article by Steve from Schmit Prototypes was featured on moldmakingtechnology.com (http://www.moldmakingtechnology.com/articles/0510tip.html) on why prototyping is important. Moldmaking Technology Magazine is published monthly and is distributed in the United States, Canada and Mexico to selected production, engineering and company management personnel employed in manufacturing plants where metalworking operations are performed. This article highlights why prototyping is crucial to the product design process.

"Whatever the item a company intends to produce, creating a prototype is crucial to the design process. Moldmakers would be wise to stay on top of technology developments and consider their use to improve the service they provide. Following are four reasons why prototyping is important" says Steve. http://www.schmitprototypes.com

Some important steps in the prototyping process include evaluating and testing the design, clarifying production costs and issues, selling the product to others and patents. Each step makes it much easier to sit down with a patent attorney and see what design aspects may be patentable. On the reverse side, it is possible to see what parts of the prototype and design violate patents of other individuals and how they can be changed before production—and the chance of a lawsuit—begins.
