Device solutions, Ltd. utilizing SchmartBoard for new Meridian

Drives Solutions Ltd., an embedded system design solution provider, has announced a partnership with Schmartboard, Inc. to provide added value for customers by allowing them to more easily add i/o and other hardware features to prototyped embedded integrated circuits.

The new Meridian/P Micro Development Board from device solutions based on Freescale MXS ARM920T.  The product allows one to transfer Desktop skills to the embedded world. The user can use the C # and Visual Studio Tools for developing Meridian/P.  Fast USB connection allows one to download and debug code directly on Meridian/P.

"Drive solutions have made software prototyping end easily," said device solutions CEO Martin Welford.  "Partnering with SchmartBoard makes that hard to be easy for our customers as well."

SchmartBoard has two major advantages over other circuit prototyping system.  First, they are small boards or circuit blocks, which physically connects together with mechanical bridges.  The other advantage is that hand soldering surface mount technology (SMT) components with SchmartBoards, is very lightweight, so users can prototype with most current SMT package types on the market.

"SchmartBoard looks at circuit prototypes from a circuit block perspective," says Neal Greenberg, Schmartboard's VP of Sales and marketing.  "Many development or reference boards from businesses ge engineers all the bells and whistles, a solution for all the possibilities.  This is expensive and unproductive.  Many times an engineer spends his time dissecting a Board to the functions that are really needed.  We believe that the boards should have core hardware, and engineers will then add the circle which blocks the needs rather than to take away what they don't need.  Device solutions has been providing its customers with this advantage by allowing them to physically connect to SchmartBoards to complete their hardware needs. "

DiSTI’s GL Studio Soars to New Heights

The DiSTI Corporation, a leading provider of advanced graphical interface technology, has announced that Scaled Composites, Burt Rutan’s experimental aircraft company and winner of the coveted Ansari X PRIZE for Space Flight in 2004, utilized DiSTI’s GL Studio to produce a comprehensive avionics systems solution for the WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo vehicles, which Scaled is designing for Virgin Galactic, part of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. To date, the GL Studio-based avionics displays have performed successfully on over 40 WhiteKnightTwo flights, beginning with the inaugural flight on December 21, 2008, and several SpaceShipTwo flights.

GL Studio was ultimately selected by Scaled Composites in 2006 after a competitive evaluation of display development tools. Of critical importance to Scaled Composites during the evaluation was the ability of a single toolkit to support prototyping, training and embedding. With the ability to meet these demands, DiSTI’s industry leading GL Studio toolkit was utilized to develop displays for the carrier, spacecraft, ground station, and flight simulator.

Scaled Composites’ decision to incorporate GL Studio throughout the entire lifecycle of their avionics displays showcases the unique design features and efficiency offered by GL Studio. Engineers with Scaled Composites employed GL Studio to rapidly prototype the complex avionics displays and seamlessly integrated them into the training simulator for extended human factors testing. The same displays were moved into the VMS Eve Aircraft and the VSS Enterprise SpaceshipTwo where GL Studio supported prototyping, testing, training and embedded paradigms for each vehicle.

The development of VMS Eve and VSS Enterprise represents the ongoing quest to develop the World’s first commercial passenger-carrying spacecraft providing private sector access to space, using an environmentally benign launch system. The VMS Eve Aircraft carries the VSS Enterprise Spacecraft to a launch altitude of over 50,000 feet. When released from VMS Eve, the VSS Enterprise rockets into space, providing occupants with a view of the Earth seen by very few and the opportunity to experience zero gravity. This launch system builds on the successful flights of SpaceShipOne, the predecessor to VSS Enterprise, which ultimately earned Scaled Composites the Ansari X Prize for Space Flight in 2004.

“DiSTI is honored to be an integral part of such a historic endeavor,” said DiSTI President Joe Swinski. “Scaled Composites is realizing the aircraft manufacturer’s dream and the vision DiSTI set forth for display development; one tool to streamline and unify the user interface experience from prototyping to training to embedded avionics.”

“DiSTI’s software has enabled us to meet all of our goals for avionics development thus far,” said Scaled Composites’ Avionics Project Manager, Peter Kalogiannis. “We evaluated many options in the beginning and found GL Studio to be easy to work with and the best fit for our needs.  Their software tools were instrumental to our success.”

The VMS Eve carried the VSS Enterprise on its inaugural flight on March 22, 2010. The inaugural solo flight of the VSS Enterprise spaceship was October 10, 2010. For more information, please visit www.scaled.com or www.virgingalactic.com.

ESCATEC invests in new diebonder to triple throughput

Heerbrugg, Switzerland -- ESCATEC, the EMS innovator, has invested in a Hilbond DB 750 diebonder to increase the company’s diebonding capabilities. The new machine is very accurate and fast, enabling ESCATEC to triple its existing diebonding throughput. The high degree of accuracy also means that the following production steps (e.g. wirebonding) have been accelerated.

The Hilbond joins the existing Amadyne SAM 42 diebonder that is older and very flexible but slower. The latter is used for bigger dies and assemblies. The new, faster Hilbond is used for products with a medium to high placement rate and high automation level or for fast prototyping.

Robert Gade, the Industrial Engineer at ESCATEC who is in charge of the diebonding machines, added, “Having these two different diebonding machines not only increases throughput and accuracy but it also enables us to use the best machine for the job be it rapid prototyping or big dies. Rapid prototyping is particularly useful here at the Heerbrugg facility as this is where our Global R&D operation is based and it enables us to ensure that we get customers’ new products quickly into production.”

In keeping with ESCATEC’s philosophy of investing in the latest state of the art software and machinery, they have just added a brand new feature to the Hilbond. Wafer mapping that enables dies to be sorted by class or by light intensity into trays. This is called “bin-batch”. It can also place dies according to the quality or classes, as the product is requesting it. The quality class can be changed in an active running program, so that a change to the available material is quickly done, just in time. A wafer map can be created from a programmed wafer and custom classes can be created if needed. Partly unpicked dies on the wafer map can be exported and stored and a converter helps to process different file types.

The diebonding machines are located in ESCATEC’s MOEMS (Micro Optic Electronic Manufacturing Services) facility in Heerbrugg which is designed to meet the growing demand for miniaturised electronics. Miniaturised electronics and sub-assemblies can be manufactured at very high levels of cleanliness and technological precision under Class 5 and Class 7 cleanroom conditions. It is supported by the rest of the Group’s global operations that include the ability to ramp up to high volume manufacturing in Asia.

Bring modern modelling techniques to vehicle design

The MapleSim Connector for VI-CarRealTime allows engineers to incorporate high-fidelity, multidomain models created in MapleSim into the real-time vehicle simulation environment of VI-CarRealTime.

MapleSim, available from Adept Scientific (Letchworth, Herts), is a Modelica-based physical modelling and simulation tool that applies modern techniques to dramatically reduce model development and analysis time while producing fast, high-fidelity simulations. VI-CarRealTime provides a fully validated real-time vehicle simulation environment that automotive engineers can use to optimise vehicle designs and control system performance. By using VI-CarRealTime Vehicle Dynamics engineers can also perform large Design of Experiments (DOE) and multi-objective optimisation studies quickly and easily.

“VI-grade customers can now leverage the intuitive physical modelling environment of MapleSim to create high-fidelity models of vehicle subsystems in a fraction of the time it would take them in other tools,” said Juergen Fett, Managing Director, VI-grade. “Then, they get automatically generated real-time code of the subsystem that they can incorporate into VI-CarRealTime’s full vehicle model, replacing the default subsystem with their own. Not only does this avoid time-consuming and error-prone hand-coding, but MapleSim lets them create extremely detailed models while maintaining real-time simulation speeds. As a result, the simulations’ results are closer to reality which ultimately leads to shorter development cycles and better products.”

“The combination of MapleSim, VI-CarRealTime and the Connector allows for the fast, accurate modelling of automotive subsystems, such as powertrains and drivelines,” said Paul Goossens, Vice President of Applications Engineering at Maplesoft. “Automotive engineers can easily do innovative work, exploring their designs in new and deeper ways, detecting problems earlier in the design cycle, and developing high-quality, practical solutions to their design challenges.”

The MapleSim Connector for VI-CarRealTime is the latest in a growing collection of connector tools and products for MapleSim, which include connectors for Simulink™, LabVIEW™, dSPACE® Systems, C code generation and more.

MERA FOKUS expand the Open Evolved Packet Core

MERA, an Eastern Europe's leader in value-added software R&D services, and Fraunhofer FOKUS, a Berlin based research and development facility specialized in developing multi-domain networks and interoperable, user-centered solutions for open communication systems, have launched a joint project in the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) domain.

MERA will be working on the OpenEPC (Open Evolved Packet Core) platform, namely in the field of Mobility Management Entity (MME) and relevant MME components and interfaces. MERA is contributing to the prototyping of the components and connecting LTE (Long Term Evolution) components to the OpenEPC for more flexible and faster communication networks. This will help telecommunications providers to develop new and faster network standards. In addition to expanding the functionality, the collaboration will result in reduced costs to software based tests in the course of the development of OpenEPC components and increase research capacities. The expanded technology will be demonstrated in October 2010 at the 1st FOKUS FUSECO Forum in Berlin, Germany.

The OpenEPC has been developed by Fraunhofer FOKUS. The software tool equips the test and development environment with a crucial function: IP (Internet Protocol) based service platforms of different application domains can be integrated within different IP-based broadband networks. The technology can link the whole range of IP platforms seamlessly and according to the latest standards – from IPTV and cloud platforms over IP Multimedia Sub System (IMS) based service platforms to proprietary company platforms.

OpenEPC is able to meet requirements to different services of the application domains. Thus, IP connections can maintain quality characteristics across different network technology borders. As a consequence, connections can be prioritized and individual IP tunnels can be reserved for particular applications like telephone services or premium Internet access.

New Michigan Contract Engineering Firm Launches

Now many of those same inventions and innovations are being used in the professional services sector, where thousands of new electronics and circuit units are needed each day to make the job easier. That is why DEB Associates was created, to be the professional engineer consulting firm for businesses looking for contract engineering, electronics engineering, and electronics design and prototyping.

”I have over 20 years of management and engineering experience in the automotive industry and thought it was time to share that knowledge. With the launch of DEBAssociates.com, we hope to bring our technical engineering skills and experience to client projects,” said Dave Bruder, founder of DEB Associates.

Many clients have been surprised by the quality of personal service that they receive from Bruder and DEB Associates:

”I just wanted to let you know how happy I am with DEB’s services. The quality was excellent, couldn’t ask for more,” said Tom Nussbaum of Dearborn.

DEB Associates is also committed to the environmental sustainability initiative and LEED building certifications that are encouraged by many communities. Bruder is on the cutting edge of the sustainability initiative, “Our recent projects in renewable energy are promising, not only for our clients but the future. Being on the Internet is a must for sharing these developments!”

DEB Associates specializes in electrical engineering and units generated by the switched-mode power supply (or SMPS, or simply switcher). This is an electronic power supply that incorporates a switching regulator for the most efficient conversion of electrical power. “Like other types of power supplies, an SMPS transfers power from a source like the electrical power grid to a load,” according to SMPS.com.

This type of power supply is the most efficient and used in manufacturing of embedded systems of computer circuit boards. These circuit boards are then placed in network units and chassis for use at call centers, transportation mechanisms and other manufacturing and professional sites throughout the world. That is why any business who has a new invention should consult DEB Associates who can design the prototype and help them find a firm that manufactures the parts for them at the lowest cost.

Shelly Jenkins of Warren said, “I received all my parts today and they look phenomenal. Thanks David for all your help. You will definitely be hearing back from us in the near future.”
